Golf Frogs win tourney, share league title

RIPON The Bret Harte High School girls' golf team won the Valley Foothills League Tournament yesterday at Spring Creek and thereby claimed a share of the overall championship.

The Bullfrogs finished second in dual matches behind Central Catholic of Modesto, but offset that with yesterday's 384-432 victory over the Raiders. The teams ended up with the same amount of points based on dual matches and tournament results.

Bret Harte actually tied Central in the dual-match-of-the-year Oct. 9 at Dryden Park in Modesto, but lost by two strokes on a handicap-hole tiebreaker.

"It was a very emotional loss," Bret Harte coach Rich Cathcart said. "It was really nice to win (the tournament)."

All four Bret Harte scorers finished in the top 10 on the par-73 course along the banks of the Stanislaus River. Senior Krystal Thomson shot 87 to finish second, four strokes behind tournament champion and VFL Most Valuable Player Gina Pecchenino of Central.

Junior Kim Artiaga finished fourth with a 97, freshman Colleen Smith came in seventh at 99 and freshman Catilin Locke placed eighth at 103.

Thomson, Artiagai and Locke earned spots on the all-VFL team as Bret Harte qualified No. 1 for next Monday's South Sub-Section Tournament at the Oakdale Country Club. Five scores will count in that tournament rather than four. Senior K.C. Seiler is Bret Harte's No. 5 player.

Linden finished third, Calaveras fourth and Ripon Christian fifth in the final standings of the VFL, which is a golf hybrid of the Mother Lode, Trans-Valley and Southern leagues.
