Masters swimmers excel in open-water events

Tuolumne County Aquatics-Sonora Sport and Fitness Masters swimmers are raking in open-water honors all over Northern California.

In the 2.7-mile Donner Lake swim, Carey Marmesh finished second in the 45-49 age group, Susan White second in 60-64 and Julie Hulet third in 50-54. The water was a pleasant 70 degrees at high altitude, but strong winds kicked up a heavy chop that made navigation difficult.

Annie Alesna (25-29), Stuart Welsh (45-49) and Sheila Monaghan (50-54) posted top-10 finishes.

In the Del Valle 2x1 Relay in Livermore, Mica Van Noord and her brother, Giancarlo Corti of San Mateo, won the brother-sister division. Each swam a mile and their times were added together.

At Whiskeytown Reservoir near Redding, Dave Harmer reveled in warm water while finishing second in a two-mile race in 58:21 and fourth in a one-miler in 28:31 only 15 seconds out of third place. He swam in the 50-54 age group.

At even-warmer Folsom Lake east of Sacramento, White finished second at both one (33:31) and two miles (1:03:33), Monaghan finished fifth at a mile (29:29) and third at two miles (58:28), Harmer was fourth in both races (27:05, 53:08), and Dave Fairfield and Frank Helm were fourth and fifth, respectively, at one mile in the 60-64 division (27:27, 28:21).

The Masters compile points throughout the open-water season, which runs from May through September. Final rankings are announced at year's end.

More than 20 team members plan to compete next month in the regional Senior Games in Napa.
