Bullfrogs win big to snap nine-game streak

WATERFORD Bret Harte High School brought its nine-game losing streak to an emphatic end by rolling to a 48-0 football victory over Waterford on Friday night.

The Bullfrogs (1-2) had last tasted victory against the same team, 50-15, a year ago at Dorroh Field.

Everyone along the Highway 4 corridor knows Waterford (0-3) was the weakest opponent Bret Harte will face this season, but they also knows a "W" is better than an "L" any day.

"We needed this," Bret Harte assistant coach Jerry Rucker said.

The Bullfrogs will try to give themselves a winning streak this Friday, when they play Patterson (1-2) at 7:30 p.m. at Dorroh.

Bret Harte found little resistance against Waterford, rushing for 313 of its 384 total yards. James Gayle ran for 104 yards on nine carries, scoring the Bullfrogs' two first-quarter touchdowns from 20 and 54 yards out.

Matt Muller ran for a two-point conversion after the second touchdown and Bret Harte had a 14-0 lead.

The Bullfrogs went to the air for their two second-quarter touchdowns, which came on passes of 29 yards to Dan McBride and 25 yards to Rob Peffer from quarterback Josh Linker. Mark St. Louis kicked both point-afters and Bret Harte had a fat 28-0 lead at halftime.

It was back to the ground in the second half, with Pat Rowe scoring on a three-yard run in the third quarter for a 35-0 lead after St. Louis' kick, and Chad Dillashaw tallying from six yards out and Spencer Morin from 36 in the fourth quarters. St. Louis booted his fourth conversion after the final touchdown.

Bret Harte runners averaged a hefty 6.4 yards per carry, Gayle leading the way with 11.6 per attempt. Morin had 69 yards on seven carries and Rowe 68 on 12, while Linker went 4-for-6 passing.

On defense, the Bullfrogs held the struggling Wildcats to 124 total yards and posted Bret Harte's first shutout since the 1996 season. Waterford was blanked for the first time this year and now has been outscored 155-13 on the season.
