The Wildcats (1-2, 1-1 Valley Oak League) lost 13-2 at Los Banos.

"They have two foreign exchange students from Belgium, and one of them (Charlotte Melotte) will be VOL MVP," Sonora coach Carey Marmesh said.

Melotte swept her three singles sets by a combined score of 18-1.

Sonora got its points in singles from Josee Bowser, 6-2 over Laura Calcagno, and Hannah Boyack, 6-2 over Lauren Soares.

Maia Pothier won three exhibition sets for Sonora.

The Wildcats play Buhach Colony on Tuesday in Atwater.

Freshman football

Summerville opened with a 32-0 loss at Escalon last night.

With just 17 players on the roster, compared to Escalon's 47, Summerville fell behind 24-0 in the first quarter, but allowed just one more touchdown over the final three quarters.

Defensively, the Cubbies were led by linebacker Brett Love (fumble recovery) and defensive ends Jacob Northcott (three tackles, one sack) and Adam Gold (three tackles).

Offensively, Summerville gained 120 total yards, but committed three turnovers.

Because Ripon, next week's varsity opponent, does not have a freshman team, the Cubbies will join forces with the Bearcubs against the Indians' sophomore team. The next freshman game will be at Gustine on Sept. 25.

Youth football

The Tuolumne County Cowboys open the Mother Lode Youth Athletic Conference regular season tomorrow against Lodi at the Lodi Grape Bowl. The bantams play at 9 a.m., the junior varsity at 11 a.m. and the varsity at 1 p.m.

In their preseason games last week at Summerville High School's Thorsted Field in Tuolumne, all three Cowboy teams were victorious over the Calaveras Redskins.

The bantams won 27-0, the JV 8-6 and the varsity 30-0 behind touchdown runs of 48, 40 and 12 yards by Michael Olenchalk and two yards by Eddie Cooper.

Punt, Pass and Kick

Area qualifying for the NFL-sanctioned competition is Sunday at 10 a.m. at Standard Park.

The event is free for boys and girls ages 8 to 15. Participants are not allowed to wear cleats, and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Division winners will advance to the next level of competition.
