Time: 7:15 p.m.

Location: Dunlavy Field.

Notes: Sonora (6-4-1 last year), is 5-0 against Johansen ... The Wildcats won the first meeting, in 1998, by forfeit because Johansen used an ineligible player while winning 16-6 at Dunlavy ... Sonora dominated in 1999 and 2000 (29-0 and 28-0, respectively), with both games played in Modesto ... In the 2001 game at Dunlavy, Sonora scored 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win 20-12 ... The Wildcats won last year, 22-14, in the valley ... Sonora coach Robert Cendro (66-30-1 in nine years) needs 10 victories to tie Gary Smith as the Wildcats' all-time winningest coach ... Smith was 76-59-1 in 13 seasons ... Like Smith (1981-91, 1995-96), Cendro is a two-tenure coach (1992-94, 1997-present) ... Sonora's returning statistical leaders are fullback Louis McColloch with 397 yards and four touchdowns on 97 carries, quarterback Jeff Hess with 86 completions in 174 attempts for 1,142 yards with nine touchdowns and 14 interceptions, and split end Nick Baker with 21 catches for 304 yards and three touchdowns.

Escalon vs. Summerville

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Location: Thorsted Field, Tuolumne

Notes: Darcy Wingo's second stint as the Bears' head coach couldn't start with a more difficult opponent the defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV champion Cougars (12-0 in '02), who also happen to be the No. 2-ranked team in the state going into the opener ? Junior Justin Tune will make his first varsity start at quarterback for Summerville (2-8 last year), but senior Kenny Cognetti, last year's starting quarterback who will start tonight at flanker, is also expected to see action under center ? Senior fullback Jake Heldstab, who ran for 133 yards on 34 carries (3.9 yards per carry) in 2002, is Summerville's leading returning rusher ? Escalon returns more than 3,500 rushing yards to its backfield from last year in Jesse Miguel (1,301 rushing yards), Tony Reis (1,164), Marcus Kistler (512) and Jon Norton (400) ? The Cougars beat Summerville 30-6 in last year's season opener at Escalon ? Summerville's last win over Escalon came in 1999, when the Bears won 10-6 at Escalon.
