THE TWAIN HARTE Niners swept the Women's Nine-Hole Golf Association championships at Palo Alto Hills in Palo Alto yesterday.

Bev Olson, Sharyn Pendleton, Sharon Young, Retha Aycock, Grace Willis and Dorothy Whelan topped Tuolumne County rival Pine Mountain Lake in their division, and also claimed the overall title against Sequoyah of Oakland, Rancho Murieta, Los Altos, Blackhawk of Danville, and Saratoga.

This is the second time in four years Twain Harte has prevailed. The club also won in 2000 and now will have the association's perpetual trophy on display in the new clubhouse. The trophy survived a fire that destroyed the old clubhouse.

Olson and Pendleton shot 4-under-par in the first flight in best-ball play, while Young and Aycock went 1-under in the second flight. Willis and Whelan really lit it up in the third flight, going 6-under.

ANOTHER HONOR came Twain Harte's way when Darr Snedeger, a sophomore at Sonora High School, won the Tri-County Junior Golf Association's Tournament of Champions at Saddle Creek in Copperopolis.

Snedeger, listing Twain Harte as his home course, shot a round of 92 to beat Corey Van Houten of Twain Harte by three strokes and Chad Clark of Twain Harte by four.

In the girls' division, Brandy Gray from Mace Meadow of Pioneer won with a 97.

Kevin Rei of Mountain Springs won the nine-hole title with a score of 43, beating fellow Mountain Springs player John Pesce by two strokes.
