TENNIS TOURNEY MOVES TO NEW DATE

The rained-out Tuolumne County Open Tennis tournament has been rescheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23 and 24.

Matches will be played the first day at Sonora High School, at Columbia College and in Twain Harte. The second-day finals will be played in Sonora.

The tournament originally was scheduled for last Saturday and Sunday, but was postponed because of unseasonable and, at times, heavy rain on Saturday.

"The rainout was a real surprise to us," said Bob Feigen, president of the sponsoring Tuolumne County Community Tennis Association. "I have resecured the courts at the different facilities and everyone is ready to go."

The rain might be a blessing in disguise, according to Feigen, who said, "The date change should actually allow us to get even more people involved. This especially applies to the Juniors."

That, he said, is because school will have started by then, families won't be on vacation, and youth players won't be involved in summer sports camps.

The Open is sanctioned by the U.S. Tennis Association.
