HOW ABOUT A FISHING PACK TRIP?

FOR ANYONE who hasn't fished the backcountry of the

Emigrant Wilderness, it is quite rewarding, especially when you

consider the exquisite scenery.

Those who are not up to going on foot can do the next best choice and go on horseback. The pack station at Aspen Meadow caters to such trips to numerous backcountry lakes. The station is located on Crabtree Road off Highway 108 and information can be obtained by calling 965-3402.

Higher up at Kennedy Meadow, pack trips are made to the

Carson-Iceberg Wilderness, Emigrant Wilderness, and to limited areas of Yosemite National Park. For more information, call 965-3900.

FISHING AT Pinecrest Lake is well into the summer pattern, which means serious anglers fish early in the day or late evening.

Sometimes referred to as a "put-and-take" lake, it is planted weekly to keep up with the heavy summer pressure.

One of the best producers here for trout is the flasher and

worm combination trolled at various depths. Bait anglers anchor at the inlet or tie up at the dam for their fish, using salmon eggs or Power Bait.

Float-tubing has become more popular recently for fly fishermen who get on the lake early before the heavy boating traffic comes out.

STREAM FISHING is improving since water levels are lowering, especially on the South Fork of the Stanislaus River at Strawberry below the Highway 108 bridge and into the meadow at Old Strawberry.

The Middle Fork also is looking better for anglers and plants

are made at Dardanelle, Kennedy Meadow, and several

major campgrounds along the way.
