Melisa Hough of the Tuolumne County Aquatics-Sonora Sport and Fitness Center swim team has been named to the Sierra Nevada Western Zone team.

She and three other girls in the 17-18 age group will compete as part of a 55-member Sierra Nevada team (mostly from the Sacramento area) in the Western Zone Championships, which are Tuesday through Saturday, Aug. 5 through 9, at Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.

They'll be going against competitors from Alaska, Arizona, Washington, Idaho, Hawaii, Oregon and Nevada, as well as against California teams from the San Diego, Inland Empire, Pacific and Southern zones.

Hough qualified by attaining Western Zone Q time standards in the 100-, 200-, 400-, 800- and 1,500-meter freestyle events, and also in the 200 butterfly and the 400 individual medley.

She won't swim all the events in Arizona, according to TCA-Fitness coach Patti Scott-Baier. Hough has become something of a distance specialist, and Scott-Baier said the swimmer's preference would be to compete in the longer freestyles, the fly and the IM. Her events will be chosen by her Sierra Nevada coaches.

Hough is going into her senior year at Sonora High School and has helped the Sonora girls' swim team win the last two Valley Oak League championships. She's the daughter of Preston and Bobbi Hough of Sonora.
