A foursome from Meadowmont of Arnold came from behind in the second round yesterday to win the Northern California Golf Association's South Sierra Zone Championship at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach.

Dennis Cheney, James Stewart, Norman Price and Melvin Price shot the low score of Day 2, a 23-under-par 121, to overtake first-round leader Tahoe City and to win by three strokes over another Calaveras County club, Saddle Creek of Copperopolis.

Meadowmont, which shot 131 in the first round, finished with a total of 252 in the 26-team tournament. Scores were determined by the two best net scores per foursome on each hole.

Bill Vanpeeren, Mark Manzano, John Arents and Chuck Gallo of Saddle Creek opened with a 126 one behind Tahoe City and finished with a 126 for a total of 255.

Both Meadowmont and Saddle Creek qualified for the overall NCGA Zone Championship, which is Aug. 18 and 19 at another famed Pebble Beach course, Spyglass Hill.

Tahoe City wound up third in the South Sierra event at 257 after shooting 125-132.
