WESTSIDE RIGHT FIELDER Mike Sturgis makes a valiant try during the bottom of the third inning of Saturday's 10-4 quarterfinal victory over Foothills of Valley Springs in the Minor tournament in Tuolumne.

Playing at its home site of Jerry Whitehead Field in Tuolumne, Westside (Tuolumne and Standard) earned a berth in the championship round of the District 15 Little League All-Star minor (9- to 10-year-olds) tournament by beating Calaveras American 15-5 yesterday.

Westside scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, three more in the third, six in the fourth and two more in the fifth to bring the mercy rule into effect. Leading Westside at the plate were Chase Twohig (4-for-4, double, two runs, two runs batted in), Colton Krieg (4-for-4, two runs, three RBIs), Zack Roberson (4-for-4, double, two RBIs, three runs), Michael Sturgis (2-for-2, double, two runs batted in) and Curtis Kellogg (3-for-4, doubles, three runs).

Top hitters for Calaveras American (Angels Camp and Copperopolis) were Jacob Devalle (3-for-3, run), Ryan Riner (2-for-3, run batted in, run) and Charlie Gomes (3-for-3, two runs).

Westside is off until Wednesday's championship game. If Westside loses on Wednesday, a winner-take-all title game will be played on Thursday.

With its first loss of the tournament, Calaveras American will play the winner of today's elimination game between High Sierra and Amador West (Jackson) at 6 p.m. tomorrow.

In the first of two elimination games yesterday, High Sierra (Twain Harte, Soulsbyville and Belleview) stayed alive with a 14-4 win over Foothills (Valley Springs).
