Cal American goes for Major crown

TWAIN HARTE The Calaveras American Giants of Angels Camp and Copperopolis beat the Westside Rangers of Tuolumne and Standard 5-1 last night at Eproson Field to earn a spot in the championship game of Little League baseball's District 15 Major Tournament of Champions for ages 11 and 12.

The Giants play the Foothills Red Sox of Valley Springs for the title tomorrow night at 6 at Eproson.

Cody Lane pitched a six-inning complete game, giving up four hits while striking out eight and walking two.

Justin Dillashaw got the big hit for the Giants, a bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the fourth to break a 1-1 tie. He drove in Curt Jurgens, Lane and Ryan Rhiner, who had reached on a fielder's choice, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, respectively.

Westside scored in the top of the first on a walk by Ricky McColloch and a single by Phil Cuper. The Giants evened it in the bottom of the inning on a walk by Dillashaw, a fielder's choice and an error on a ball hit by Clay Hamm.

After Dillashaw's clutch hit, the Giants added a run in the fifth on a single by Hamm and a series of passed balls and wild pitches.

Daniel Link pitched for Westside, giving up seven hits while walking four and striking out seven in five innings.

Both the Giants and Foothills are 2-0 in the single-elimination tournament. The Giants opened with a 5-4, seven-inning victory over High Sierra (Twain Harte, Soulsbyville, Belleview), while the Red Sox beat Linden 13-1 and Amador East of Sutter Creek 3-2.
