WOODS CREEK WINS SECOND STRAIGHT TITLE

The Woods Creek Diamondbacks of Sonora and Columbia flexed their offensive, defensive and pitching muscles on Saturday as they wrapped up an undefeated season by clinching a second straight District 15 Tournament of Champions title.

Behind Ryles Richards' pitching and Taylor Thrift's hitting, the Diamondbacks cruised past Linden 11-0 in Little League baseball action at Sonora High School's Bev Barron Field to complete a perfect 21-0 season.

Offensively, Woods Creek scored in every inning but the fifth, and posted multiple runs in the first, third and sixth. Thrift went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks, four runs batted in and one run scored.

Thrift got the ball rolling in the first when he gave Woods Creek an early 2-0 lead with a double. Kyle Dodge followed with a run-scoring single, putting the Diamondbacks ahead 3-0.

Thrift struck again in the sixth when his two-run double forced the game to be called by the 10-run mercy rule.

While Thrift, Josh Schultz (1-for-2, two walks, RBI, three runs scored) and Ben Gorgas (2-for-4, RBI) were providing the offense, Richards provided the Diamondbacks with a solid pitching effort.

Richards worked five innings, striking out four and allowing five hits, and helped himself out at the plate by going 1-for-2 with two walks, one run scored and one RBI.

Before Alex Stewart ended the game by relieving Richards in sixth, he started the game with a fine defensive play. After Richards allowed a leadoff single in the first inning, Stewart caught a flyball in deep centerfield and then uncorked a perfect throw to first base, doubling up the baserunner for his third outfield assist in the tournament's three games.

In addition to Stewart's double play, the Diamondbacks' infield turned two more twin killings.
