ROSEVILLE Katie Baier and Melisa Hough broke six Tuolumne County Aquatics swimming records in the prestigious Summer Sanders Invitational at the Roseville Aquatic Center.

The meet, named for the former U.S. Olympics swimmer from the Roseville area, was for competitors who had posted junior-senior time standards and included some who have achieved national standards. The top 27 in each event made the finals.

In the opening race of the three-day event, Baier, 16, and Hough, 17, set team records in the 800-meter freestyle. Baier, normally a sprinter, improved by 18 seconds (10:12.45) to break a record set by Hough in he 15-16 age group in 2001. Hough (10:20.92) set a new mark in the 17-18 division.

"Both swam very even, perfectly paced races and passed swimmers in the final laps," TCA coach Patti Scott-Baier said.

Baier also broke records in the 100 and 200 freestyles (1:03.85 and 2:21.96, respectively), eclipsing marks she herself set only last month in Clovis. She qualified 17th in the 100 and finished ninth in the finals. Baier also was 16th in the 50 free (29.81).

In the 200 backstroke, Baier (2:39.73) broke Lauren Gerber's 1999 record by two seconds, and also established an "AA" time and finished 12th.

Her performance came only five minutes after competing in the 100 free final.

Hough, who thrives in distance events, set her second record in the grueling 1,500 free (19:30.41). She broke her own record, set in Clovis, by six seconds.

"Melisa's conditioning showed in the final 100 meters, where she dropped her pace by four seconds," Scott-Baier said.

Patty Allen, 14, Lisa Watts, 16, and Austin Nieh, 13, qualified for the meet for the first time, and Allen swam personal bests in the 100 back (1:19.38) and 50 free (30.31).
