BH gridders flip-flop foes

Except for the sites, Bret Harte High School's football schedule is the same for the 2003 season as it was last year.

The Bullfrogs play the same teams in the same order, but flip-flip the home fields. They open under eighth-year head coach Gordon Sadler on Sept. 12 at Livingston, then play their home opener Sept. 19 at Dorroh Field against Johnson West of Sacramento before going back on the road Sept. 26 to play Waterford. Both West and Waterford have second-year varsity teams.

Then comes a difficult two-game tussle with the mighty Trans-Valley League Oct. 3 at home against Patterson and Oct. 10 on the road against Hughson.

The rest of the regular season will be played out in the Mother Lode League, beginning with Amador on Oct. 17 in Sutter Creek. Three straight home games follow Oct. 24 against Argonaut, Oct. 31 (Halloween night) against black-and-orange Summerville, and Nov. 7 against Linden before the traditional finale against archrival Calaveras on Nov. 14 in San Andreas.

Calaveras won the MLL championship and reached the Sac-Joaquin Section title game last year against Escalon. The Redskins have won four of the last five league titles, including a co-championship with Bret Harte in 1999 the last year the Bullfrogs beat the Redskins.

Amador is working on a run of three straight playoff appearances, including an MLL title in 2001, Argonaut and Linden are viewed as up-and-coming teams, and Summerville will have a new coach for the first time since 1990 as Dave Woods (13-0 against Bret Harte) stepped down for health reasons.

Bret Harte will be looking to bounce back from a 2002 season that began with three victories and ended with seven straight losses.
