BH's Messer sets school record in pole vault

MODESTO Robert Messer set a school record while finishing fourth in the boys' pole vault for Bret Harte High School during yesterday's Sub-Section 1 track meet at Modesto Junior College.

Messer, a senior, cleared 14 feet to easily earn a spot in the Sac-Joaquin Section Trials, which are next Wednesday at the University of California at Davis. He had the same mark as Tracy's Andrew Terry and Riverbanks's Daniel Harrison , and the tie was broken based on fewer misses.

The vault, which was held as a final on a day when most events went off as trials, was won by Forrest Dyer of Lodi at 15-0.

All told, nine jumpers advanced to sections.

Messer wasn't the only Bret Harte athlete to have a good day.

? Germaine Engstrom qualified fifth in the girls' 300-meter low hurdles (47.88), eighth in the 100 lows (16.31) and fifth in the 4x100 relay with Tiana Johnson, Emily Self and Shamika Smith (51.26).

? Krystal Thomson qualified second in the discus throw (123-0) and fifth in the shot put (33-10 1/2).

? Johnson qualified fifth in the 400 (1:00.66).

? Gia Cizmich qualified ninth in the 800 (2:26.25), taking the last spot.

The Sub-Section Finals are tomorrow at MJC, where field events start at 3 p.m. and running events at 6. The top eight in each event go on to sections.

Cizmich will be an alternated in the 1,600, and Bryan Morris and Erik Aardal will run in the boys' 1,600 and 3,200. Trials weren't held in the distance events.
