If took the Summerville High School girls' soccer team just 13 minutes yesterday to let the rest of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoff hopefuls know that the two-time defending champions are still the team to beat.

The Bears (22-1-2) peppered the Livingston Wolves with three goals in the first 13 minutes at Thorsted Field in Tuolumne en route to a 4-0 victory in their first-round game.

"Overall, I was very impressed with the passing and finishing by our offense at the start of the game, and our defense for holding off the 20 minutes of strong pressure Livingston gave us in the second half," Summerville coach Jim Frazier said.

Summerville made its opening statement less than one minute into the game when the Bears stole the opening kickoff and raced down the right sideline. Shannon Hayes then recorded the first of her two assists when she sent a crossing pass to Megan Reynolds, who blasted a shot off the hands of the Livingston keeper and into the net with 40 seconds having elapsed.

"Megan's finish on her first touch of the game really fired up the team and we dominated play the next 20 minutes," Frazier said.

Just three minutes after hooking up with Reynolds, Hayes sent another pass across the goalmouth. This time, left-wing halfback Bridgette Berry collected the pass and popped a header into the net for a 2-0 lead.

Reynolds and Jordan Vermillion combined to up the Bears' lead to 3-0 at the 13-minute mark when Reynolds sent a lead pass to Vermillion between a pair of defenders. Vermillion then juked the Livingston goalie and tapped in the first of her two goals on the game.

Reynolds and Vermillion also combined on the game's final goal at the 70-minute mark.

MLL champion Summerville will entertain Hughson (15-3-3) tomorrow in a semifinal at Thorsted. The section-preferred kickoff time is 3:30 p.m., but Frazier is hoping Hughson will agree to a 5:30 start as Livingston did.
