MARYSVILLE Senior midfielder Julie Lauterbach scored on a penalty kick in overtime to give Bret Harte High School a 3-2 victory over Marysville yesterday in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV girls' soccer playoffs.

The winning goal came midway through the second 10-minute overtime half after a shot by Natalie Kramer was touched by the hand of a Marysville fullback in the penalty box.

Bret Harte (15-5-5) went into a defensive shell the last five minutes and held off the Indians (13-4-2) to secure a berth in tomorrow's semifinals against Hilmar (18-5-1). Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in Hilmar, with the winner advancing to Saturday's 1 p.m. championship game at American River College in Sacramento against either Hughson (15-3-3) or two-time defending champion Summerville (22-1-2).

The semifinal pairings are exactly the same as last year, when Hilmar beat Bret Harte 3-1 and Summerville got past Hughson 4-2 in overtime.

Hilmar, the Trans-Valley League champion, won 4-0 yesterday over Mother Lode League runner-up Linden, while MLL champion Summerville coasted to a 4-0 victory over TVL No. 3 Livingston and TVL runner-up Hughson won 2-0 over Golden Empire League runner-up Capital Christian of Sacramento.

Bret Harte, the MLL's No. 3 team, seemed to face a daunting task against GEL champion Marysville, which outscored its opponents 98-8 during the regular season.

"Those statistics were kind of intimidating, but we figured out that numbers don't necessarily tell the whole story," Truman said.

For a while it looked like they did, as the Bullfrogs trailed 1-0 at halftime and 2-0 early in the second half.

Junior forward Megan Shires scored Bret Harte's first goal on a header, deflecting a shot taken by sophomore forward Kathleen Avrit.

The equalizer came with 10 minutes left in regulation, when Avrit collected a pass from Lauterbach and smacked a 12-yard bullet into the net.
