Baseball years ends with twinbill loss

The Summerville High School baseball team wrapped up its disappointing 2003 season by dropping both ends of Friday's doubleheader against Amador at the Summerville diamond in Tuolumne.

In losing 9-2 and 11-4, the Bears (3-20-1, 1-14 Mother Lode League) finished in the MLL's cellar, nine games behind co-champions Linden and Bret Harte. Calaveras could earn a slice of the MLL title if the Redskins beat Amador today in the league's final game of the regular season.

"I think this season showed everybody it takes a lot of commitment and desire to want to come out and play good baseball," Summerville coach Donnie Wright said. "It you don't have the dedication, you won't have a good season."

In Game 1, Summerville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Quint Gerber led off with a single, moved up to third base on a pair of wild pitches, then scored on Travis Ford's groundout to second base.

After surviving a couple of early jams, losing pitcher Ford gave up two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Relief pitcher Scotty Morrison pitched the sixth and seventh innings, allowing five runs on six walks and four hits.

In Game 2, Summerville and starting pitcher Ryan Drewery fell behind 10-0 before the Bears put together a four-run sixth.

After Wyatt Ray walked and Ford doubled, Adam Artzer drove in Ray with a single, leaving runners on first and third. Drewery walked to load the bases, setting the table for Jacob Loewen, who blooped a single over second base, scoring Ford. Bubba Fristad then followed with a two-run single.

In his final high school game, Gerber made his first varsity appearance on the mound in the sixth, giving up three runs in two-thirds inning of work, but striking out the first batter he faced. Dillon Ray and Ford mopped up over the final 2 1-3 innings.
