BH track teams finish unbeaten in MLL


The Bret Harte High School boys' and girls' track and field teams wrapped up undefeated Mother Lode League seasons by beating Linden and Calaveras in a double dual meet yesterday at Dorroh Field.

The varsity girls beat Linden 85-21 and Calaveras 73-62 with 10 first-place finishes.

Tiana Johnson finished with three first-place finishes in the 200 (27.8 seconds), 400 (1:022.3) and triple jump (34 feet, 5 1-4 inches).

Finishing with two first-place finishes for Bret Harte were Krystal Thompson in the discus (120-8) and shot put (32-10 1-2) and Germaine Engstrom in the 100 low hurdles (16.7) and 300 low hurdles (48.6).

Also notching first-place finishes for the girls' team were Shamika Smith in the 100 (13.4), Gia Cizmich in the 1,600 (5:41.7) and the 4x100 relay team of Johnson, Emily Self, Smith and Cizmich (51.4).

Behind Robert Messer's record-setting performance in the pole vault, the varsity boys' team beat Linden 105-29 and Calaveras 70-64.

Messer cleared the bar at 13-7 yesterday in the pole vault, breaking his own school record by one inch.

Aaron Elevi returned to competition from a broken ankle he suffered at the end of basketball season and notched a first-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 6-0.

Dominic Smith put together three first-place efforts in the 100 (10.7), 200 (23.5) and long jump (19- 1-2).

Other first-place finishers were Eric Aardal in the 3,200 (10:35), Brian Morris in the 1,600 (4:49), Sean Ziehlke in the 300 (43.7) and the 4x100 relay team of Adam Saul, Ziehlke, Pat Rowe and Smith (45.3).

Bret Harte will compete in the Mother Lode League trials and finals at Dorroh Field on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
