Baseball Bears shock Calaveras

Once again, there is joy in Mudville.

With Ryan Drewery throwing a complete game and Quint Gerber shining in the field and at the plate, the Summerville High School baseball team notched its first Mother Lode League win of the season by beating playoff-contending Calaveras 4-2 yesterday at the Summerville diamond in Tuolumne.

"When you put it all together and play solid defense, look what can happen," Summerville coach Donnie Wright said, whose team snapped a seven-game losing streak. "We played a very strong defensive game (committing no errors) and didn't make any baserunning mistakes. All in all, it was a very good all-around game."

After spotting the Redskins a 2-0 lead, Summerville (3-15-1, 1-9 MLL) broke through against Calaveras starter Dan Sweet in the bottom of the third on the way to denying the San Andreans a share of first place.

Following a leadoff single by Bubba Fristad, the Bears dodged a bullet when Calaveras third baseman Brice Byker was unable to handle Travis Ford's sharp grounder.

Instead of turning Ford's grounder into a double play, the error left runners on first and second with no outs for Wyatt Ray, who promptly made Calaveras (10-10, 7-5) pay for Byker's error by bouncing a ground-rule double down the left field line, scoring Fristad and cutting the Redskins' lead to 2-1.

Then, with runners on second and third, Quint Gerber stepped up and drilled a three-run home run over the left-center field fence, the first round-tripper of his varsity career, giving Drewery a 4-2 lead with which to work.
