Soccer Bears move closer to title

The Summerville High School girls' soccer team got another classic effort from the tandem of Jordan Vermillion and Megan Reynolds in a 3-1 win over Bret Harte yesterday on Thorsted Field in Tuolumne, all but clinching the Bears third consecutive Mother Lode League championship.

Vermillion scored twice in the first half on assists by Reynolds, and recorded an assist on Reynolds' second-half goal, as the Bears (19-0-2, 10-0-2) moved three points ahead of second-place Linden (10-3) and six points ahead of the Bullfrogs (12-5-5, 8-3-2) with three games remaining in the regular season.

Desperately in need of a win to keep alive its chances of winning the MLL, Bret Harte struck first and took a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game when Christe Miller took a pass from Kiri Dyken and slipped a shot past Bears' goalie Kellie Pierce, who lost her footing while attempting to stop the shot.

Facing an early and unfamiliar deficit, Vermillion and Reynolds, Summerville's leaders in scoring and assists, respectively, turned to an old standby the corner kick to help dig the Bears out of their early hole.

First, at the 12-minute mark, Reynolds sent a kick from the left corner to the front of the Bret Harte goal where a leaping Vermillion slammed a header into the lower left corner of the net, knotting the score at 1-1.

Summerville then took a 2-1 lead at the 23-minute mark on yet another Reynolds-to-Vermillion corner kick. This time, setting up at the right corner, Reynolds sailed a picture-perfect pass to the far post, where Vermillion once again managed to shake off the Bret Harte defenders and send a one-timer past Bret Harte goalie Tawnie Lee. The set-play goal was Vermillion's seventh of the season and fifth off a Reynolds' assist.
