The weather smiled on the Tuolumne County Tennis Association and the organization's second annual Junior Tournament went on as scheduled Saturday at Sonora High School.

Thirty players dueled in boys' and girls' singles and doubles competition along the banks of Woods Creek under mostly sunny skies between rainstorms.

The match of the day, according to tournament co-director Carey Marmesh, was the boys' A doubles final between Sam Segerstrom-Jonathan Newkirk of Sonora and the Calaveras County team of Kevin Tan-Nick Malvini. Segerstrom and Newkirk, doubled partners for Sonora High, rallied for a 6-4 victory.

The A singles final between Segerstrom and another Sonora player, Jared Orrock, also was a humdinger as Segerstrom came back from a 6-4 deficit for a 9-7 pro-set victory.

Ian McHargue edged fellow Sonoran Clark Parkan 7-5 for the boys' B singles title, then Parkan moved up a notch in doubles and won the title with John Quinn of Groveland by beating Matt Reimers and Joey Borla of Sonora 6-4.

Amanda Ankrom of Columbia won the round-robin girls' B singles title in the 13-14 age group, finishing just ahead of Summerville High player Natalie Rhorer.

Rachel Shelton of Sonora was second to Cheyenne Johnson of Murphys in girls' B singles 11-12, and Shelton teamed with Columbia's Nikole Ankrom to beat Johnson and Tatiana Aquiline of Murphys for the girls' B doubles title.

Calaveras High's Kelli Noriega beat Sonora's Maia Pothier 6-4 in the girls' A singles final, then combined with Angela Shrode to beat Pothier and Rebecca Shelton for the doubles crown.
