Golfers set another record

VALLEY SPRINGS The red-hot Bret Harte High School boys' golf team set another school record yesterday while beating archrival Calaveras 182-243 at La Contenta.

The Bullfrogs (16-1, 14-0 Mother Lode League) broke their previous La Contenta record by four strokes. The 2001 Bullfrogs shot 186 there, but lost to an even better Calaveras team.

Such was not the case yesterday as the Bullfrogs dominated behind medalist Chris Boucher's one-under par round of 34. The junior made two birdies and an eagle, and would have had absolutely amazing score if not for a double bogey on the next-to-last hole.

Boucher had plenty of help as Darren Baca shot a 36, twins Scott and Erik Kifune both shot 37, and Kris Svendsen shot 38.

"This is the time of year you want to play well, with the league tournament and sub-sections coming up," Bret Harte coach Rich Cathcart said.

The MLL tourney is next Thursday at Castle Oaks in Ione, and the Small-School Sub-Section Tournament is May 5 at Diablo Grande in Patterson.

Bret Harte's other record this season was a 192 on its home course, Greenhorn Creek, also against Calaveras. Another record reportedly was set at Mountain Springs in Sonora with a 198, but Cathcart said research revealed that a lower score exists.

Bret Harte is on the verge of its second straight MLL title and its sixth in the last eight seasons but its first in an odd-numbered year during that span.

Chris Scott led Calaveras with a 36.

Bret Harte's final dual match is Tuesday at Greenhorn Creek against Summerville.
