Soccer Bears whip Argonaut

JACKSON Bridgette Berry broke a scoreless tie in the first half and Megan Reynolds notched her fifth hat trick of the season with three goals in the second half as the Summerville High School girls' soccer team opened Round 3 of the Mother Lode League season by beating Argonaut 4-1 last night.

After losing 6-0 and 7-0 in their first two games against Summerville this season, the winless Mustangs (0-11 MLL) held the first-place Bears (18-0-2, 9-0-2) to a scoreless tie through most of the first half until Shannon Hayes found Berry with a crossing pass at the 38-minute mark, which the left wing turned into a goal and a 1-0 lead.

"Argonaut played much better this game than in our two previous league matches," Summerville coach Jim Frazier said. "They were very aggressive to the ball and defended strongly."

Berry's score opened the floodgates for Reynolds, whose three second-half goals upped her season-total to 27, tying her with Jordan Vermillion for the team lead.

Reynolds' goals came at the 48-, 53- and 70-minute marks, with Hayes assisting on the first and Ashley Rice on the last two.

Backup goalie Kelly Marquardt, filling in for an injured Kellie Pierce, recorded Summerville's seventh MLL shutout and ninth overall.

The Bears visit Linden, which they have beaten 3-1 and 8-0 this season, tomorrow night at 7.
