OFFENSIVE WOES FOLLOW SONORA SOFTBALLERS

The Sonora High School softball team ran into some heavy rain and stiff competition at last week's Buena Vista Longhorn Tournament in San Diego.

After getting rained out of Monday's doubleheader, the Wildcats enjoyed an excursion to Knottsberry Farm Amusement Park on Tuesday before returning to the field and losing both ends of Wednesday's doubleheader.

"There was some good competition down there," Sonora coach Nick Parry said. "A lot of those girls play year-round, and it was our first game in eight days, so we had way too much time off."

Sonora opened Wednesday's twinbill with a 11-1, five-inning loss to Imperial Valley.

The Wildcats (4-12) posted their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth inning when Cayla Brawley doubled and scored on a single by Nicole Wong. Starting pitcher Carrie Martinez picked up the loss.

Things didn't get much better for the Cats in a 9-1, five-inning loss to Southwest in Game 2. Holly Barton notched Sonora's only hit of the game and was saddled with the loss in her four innings of work on the mound.

Barton also scored Sonora's only run of the game in the fifth inning when she reached second on errory by the Southwest left fielder and scored when the Southwest shortstop booted Margaret Hemphill's ground ball.

"(Southwest) is just a good team," Parry said. "We didn't play too badly, they just hit the ball real well."

The Cats return to Valley Oak League play this week with trips to East Union tomorrow and Manteca on Thursday.
