TIOGA GOLFERS WIN A WILD ONE

The Timberwolves (6-9) managed to withstand the rain, hail and snow at Pine Mountain Lake to beat Gustine 239-240 in a thriller yesterday afternoon.

With Jimmy Atkins, Tioga's regular No. 5 player, away on vacation, Japanese exchange student Yasu Fujinaga stepped in for the Timberwolves and beat Gustine's Tavio Borba with a double-bogey six on the final hole of the day to clinch the victory.

"We figured the match was over because Jimmy was gone, but Yasu came in all smiles," Tioga coach Gregg Bernheisel said. "It was cool to see Yasu win a match for us. He had a dream round, getting his first birdie ever (on the par-3, No. 14).

Danny Monroe tied Gustine's Chris Medeiros for the top round of the day with a seven-over-par 39 in tough conditions.

Rounding out Tioga's scores were Jason Wiercinski (44), Rafael Kyllonen (47), Andrew Katosic (54) and Fujinaga (55).

Following Medeiros for Gustine were Nate Longoria (44), Matt Dudeys (47), Zeno Caballero (54) and Borba (56).
