The road to another Mother Lode League title got a whole lot easier last night for the Summerville High School girls' soccer team.

With the Bears beating Calaveras 4-1 in the second-round finale at Thorsted Field in Tuolumne, and second-place Bret Harte losing 2-0 in an upset at Linden, Summerville begins the third and final round of league play with a nearly insurmountable four-point lead over the Bullfrogs in the standings.

Once again, Summerville (17-0-2, 8-0-2) got another solid performance from Megan Reynolds, who pumped in two goals in the first 15 minutes of action and tacked on her team-leading 14th assist on a second-half goal by Kadi Davies.

Nichole Caldera also scored for Summerville while Shannon Hayes and Kelly Marquardt recorded assists.

"We played a good game (last night), especially in the first half with very good passing, aggressiveness to the ball and solid defense by all four backs," Summerville coach Jim Frazier said. "It was a good note to finish on as the second round of league play came to a close."

After Reynolds' two early goals, Caldera scored just minutes before halftime to give Summerville a 3-0 lead at the break.

Calaveras finally broke through at the 65-minute mark, but Davies and the Bears responded two minutes later with their fourth and final score.

With five league games remaining, Summerville leads Bret Harte 26-22 in the points standings.

The Bears open Round 3 on Tuesday at Argonaut. Summerville won in Jackson 6-0 on March 18 and beat the Mustangs in Tuolumne 7-0 on April 3.

Frosh-SophLimited to just nine players, the Bearcubs (8-6-4, 4-4-2) dropped a 1-0 decision to Calaveras.Fullbacks Megan Schlenker and Jennifer Baker led the defense.
