SOCCER BEARS DOWN AMADOR

Jordan Vermillion recorded her second hat trick of the season and the unbeaten Summerville girls' team avenged an earlier tie against Amador by shutting out the Buffaloes 3-0 at Thorsted Field in Tuolumne last night.

After Amador managed to put the lid on the high-scoring Bears' offense in a 0-0 tie on March 27 at Sutter Creek, Vermillion came out blazing in the first half yesterday with a pair of goals.

She gave the Bears a 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game when she took a pass from Shannon Hayes, slipped past a defender and nailed a shot just inside the far post.

Vermillion sent Summerville into halftime with a 2-0 lead with her second goal at the 32-minute mark by beating a pair of defenders off a pass from Kelly Marquardt.

Capping her hat trick nine minutes into the second half, Vermillion redirected a throw-in by Marquardt with a header, recollected the ball, sped past another defender and blasted home a shot from the top of the penalty box.

"Even though it is spring break, the team came out fast and played with a lot of determination," Summerville coach Jim Frazier said. "We played a strong game, not only in the scoring department against a very good defensive team, but in midfield and defense.

"Center halfbacks Lindsay Vermillion and Ashley Rice played a strong tandem of ball control and distribution," Frazier added. "They're playing really well together now and it cements the possession game, which not only sets up the attack, but helps keep the pressure off the defense."

Bears' goalie Kelly Pierce saved three shots in recording the shutout.

Since the tie with Amador, Summerville has won five straight Mother Lode League game by a whopping 26-3 margin.

With the win, Summerville (16-0-2, 7-0-2) maintained its one game lead over of Bret Harte in the MLL standings with six games remaining.

The Bears host Calaveras, which they beat 4-0 on April 1, tomorrow night at Thorsted Field in Tuolumne.
