Swim Cats sweep VOL titles


LIVINGSTON Sonora High School's swimming juggernaut

completed its championship roll through the Valley Oak League on Friday with dominating girls' and boys' victories over Buhach Colony of Atwater at Livingston High.

Both finished with spotless 7-0 VOL records to reign as champions in the same year for the first time. The girls, who won 134-33, have captured two straight titles, and the boys, 112-48 winners, are champs for the second time in four years.

"All the kids are so proud to have made school history in this way," Sonora coach LaDeane Hansten said. "It's been the best year ever."

Sonora won every girls' event and eight of 11 boys' races. The girls, who won their VOL meets by an average score of 124-42, finished 1-2-3 in five events and 1-2 in five others.

The 1-2-3s:

? Corynne Guthrie, Lauren Rogers and Cammy Fumar, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle.

? Melisa Hough, Patty Allen and Shannon Conant in the 200 individual medley.

? Katie Baier, Kelsea Arnold and Brittney Martino in the 100 butterfly.

? Gillian Hunt, Hough and Heather Fisher in the 100 backstroke.

? Martino, Conant and Allen in the 100 breaststroke.

The other 1-2s:

? Fisher-Baier-Fumar-Hough and Lisa Watts-Becky Clinite-Guthrie-Allen in the 200 medley relay.

? Gourley and Gillian Hunt in the 200 free (Hillary Sauls was fourth).

? Gourley and Watts in the 100 free (Lauren Foster was fourth).

? Baier-Fumar-Martino-Gourley and Clinite-Guthrie-Conant-Allen in the 200 free relay.

? Gourley-Arnold-Hough-Baier and Karli Dahlin-Lauren Caldwell-Watts-Martino in the 400 free relay.

The boys had four 1-2 finishes by:

? Josh Land and Zach Lemas in the 200 free (David Keyes was fifth).

? James Pedro and Robert Dickerson in the 500 free (Greg Benton was fourth).

? Curtis Rappe-Dickerson, Matt Yacovetti-Land and Aaron Barnett-Danny Scott-Dan Merthe-Pedro in the 200 free relay.

? Scott and Steven Siville in the 100 breast (Land was fourth).
