SANTA CRUZ Dick Todd of the Tuolumne County Aquatic Masters set a meet record in the 200-yard breaststroke

during the Pacific Masters Short-Course Championships at the University of California.

Todd, 61, negotiated the grueling event in 2:43.45 to eclipse the record he set last year (2:46.44) by nearly three seconds. He won the event in the 60-64 age division and also qualified for the Masters Nationals, which are next month in Tempe, Ariz.

He also won and qualified in the 50 breast with a time of 34.96.

Todd hardly was alone in earning a trip to the nationals as four other Masters swam 10 qualifying times.

? Also in 60-64, Dave Fairfield and Frank Helm finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,000 freestyle and both were well under the national qualifying standard of 15:02 Fairfield in 14:14.76 and Helm in 14:21.59.

100 breast (1:06.98) and 200 IM (2:12.84).
