Masters set record, qualify for nationals

SANTA CRUZ Dick Todd of the Tuolumne County Aquatic Masters set a meet record in the 200-yard breaststroke

during the Pacific Masters Short-Course Championships at the University of California.

Todd, 61, negotiated the grueling event in 2:43.45 to eclipse the record he set last year (2:46.44) by nearly three seconds. He won the event in the 60-64 age division and also qualified for the Masters Nationals, which are next month in Tempe, Ariz.

He also won and qualified in the 50 breast with a time of 34.96.

Todd hardly was alone in earning a trip to the nationals as four other Masters swam 10 qualifying times.

? Also in 60-64, Dave Fairfield and Frank Helm finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,000 freestyle and both were well under the national qualifying standard of 15:02 Fairfield in 14:14.76 and Helm in 14:21.59.

? In the same age group for women, Susan White qualified in the 1,000 free (17:28.72) and the 1,650 free (28:36.70). She finished third in both races.

? Mary Tufts, 49, qualified with a personal best in the 100 butterfly (1:14.67).

? Paul McIlroy, 37, qualified in five events, cracking the national standard by more than 10 seconds in the difficult 400 individual medley (4:47.59). He also qualified in the 50 fly (26.36), 50 breast (30.04),

100 breast (1:06.98) and 200 IM (2:12.84).

Also:

? Helm swam a personal best in the 100 free (1:12.15) while leading off in the 400 free relay.

? White had a personal best in the 100 fly (1:53.66).

? Mike Jones, 57, and Toby Palmer, 27, both in the meet for the first time, combined for three bests Jones in the 50 free (27.89) and Palmer in the 50 free (26.09) and in his first try at the 200 back (2:28.88).

? Helm, Fairfield, Jones and Todd earned a bronze medal for third place in the 400 free relay (4:25.86).
