In a showdown for first place in the Mother Lode League, the Summerville High School girls' soccer team got everything it needed a fast start, strong play from its supporting players and scoring from its stars to hold off Bret Harte in a 4-3 thriller yesterday at Dorroh Field in Angels Camp.

The Bears (15-0-2, 6-0-2) moved back atop the MLL standings for the first time since March 27 thanks to a blistering, early-game attack that led to two goals in the first 10 minutes of action.

"The strongest aspects of our game (last night) were coming out fast and holding the lead against a Bret Harte team (which) has made a season-long habit of scoring most of their goals in the second half," said Summerville coach Jim Frazier, whose team tied Bret Harte 1-1 on March 25 in Tuolumne after beating them 2-1 on March 1 in the championship game of the Bret Harte Tournament.

Bridgette Berry got the ball rolling for Summerville eight minutes into the game when she took a crossing pass from Shannon Hayes behind the Bullfrogs' defense and tapped it home for a 1-0 lead.

Just two minutes later, Hayes collected a pass from Ashley Rice along the right sideline, outran a Bret Harte defender and blasted a shot from the right corner past Frogs' keeper Tawnie Lee into the top-left corner of the net, leaving the stunned Bullfrogs (10-3-4, 6-1-1) with a 2-0 deficit.

Summerville's leading scorers got into the action at the 23-minute mark by way of their most successful play a corner kick when Megan Reynolds lofted a pass from the right corner to a leaping Jordan Vermillion, who headed in a shot for a 3-0 Summerville lead.
