Freshman Sam Segerstrom made an impressive varsity debut for the Sonora High School boys' tennis team yesterday in a 10.5-4.5 victory over Pitman of Turlock at the Sonora courts.

Segerstrom, the Valley Oak League novice singles champion, teamed with veteran Jonathan Newkirk at No. 2 doubles to easily win two sets by a combined score of 20-4 10-3 over Eddie Isaac-Derek Louis and 10-1 over Mark Lazan-Manjinder Singh.

"Now that the novice tournament is over, I'm excited to have my five top junior varsity players move up to work out with the varsity and challenge for their spots," Sonora coach Carey Marmesh said. "It raises the bar a little for everyone and just gives us that much more depth."

All three singles players won two of three for the Wildcats (7-6, 7-3 VOL), with No. 2 Tom McDonnell taking a set from Pitman ace Nathaniel Souza. McDonnel rallied from a 4-1 deficit to win 7-5.

He also beat Jeremy Blackman, while No. 1 Phil Emery and No. 2 Jason Diestel both defeated Blackman and Andrew Kajioka.

At No. 1 doubles, Garrett Diestel and Cory Seibert went 1-1.

Sonora is at Manteca tomorrow.
