Bret Harte High School's Rich Cathcart has been named Athletic Director of the Year in the Sac-Joaquin Section for 2002-03.

He was honored by his peers during a convention of the California State Athletic Directors Association in Reno. Association president Rick Francis of Sonora High made the presentation.

Cathcart, 53, has headed Bret Harte's athletic program for the last eight years, and also has had a long and distinguished coaching career for the Bullfrogs.

As athletic director, he is in charge of the vital Century Club dinner, which annually raises some $15,000 for Bullfrog teams. In fact, he has been organizing the event since 1991, four years before he became athletic director.

Cathcart also is working on a coaching certification program through the California Interscholastic Federation and on a drug testing program for athletes.

On the coaching front, Cathcart is in his 19th season

heading the boys' golf team, which has won numerous Mother Lode League championships and last year was second in the Small-School Sub-Section Tournament at Greenhorn Creek.

Cathcart also coaches the girls' golf team, which was formed four years ago and has won the MLL twice.

He is perhaps best known for his 25 years as varsity boys' basketball coach from 1975-99. Cathcart's teams won 399 games, a bevy of league titles and one Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship (in the days when there were only three divisions). That was the 1985 Bullfrog team, which also finished second in Northern California.

Cathcart's 1992 and 1993 teams played in the Division IV section finals at Arco Arena in Sacramento, the '92 team as a No. 10 seed.

He was the varsity football head coach from 1991-95 after assisting Hal Clements for 19 seasons, and, in his early days, Cathcart was an assistant varsity basketball coach and the head frosh-soph basketball coach for one season each, and the frosh-soph baseball coach for two years.
