Baseball Frogs cruise past Summerville

Another solid pitching performance by Ryan Carter, coupled with the Bullfrogs' impressive day at the plate, allowed the Bret Harte High School baseball team to cruise past Summerville 11-1 yesterday at the Bret Harte diamond

On the mound, Carter allowed just one earned run on three hits in four innings while the Bullfrogs' offense did its job, scoring three runs in the second and fourth innings before Travis Emerson's three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth brought the game to an early conclusion via the 10-run rule.

"Carter's been throwing great all year long," Bret Harte coach Heath Lane said of his No. 3 starter, who upped his record to 4-2 to go along with a 2.50 earned-run average. "We didn't know what we were going to do when we lost Jed Jenkins, but (Carter's) pitched well."

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, Bret Harte (8-5, 3-1 Mother Lode League) took a 4-0 lead in the second when Anthony Bennett's run-scoring single highlighted a three-run inning.

The Frogs upped their lead to 7-0 in the fourth when Sean Nelson drove in Ken Baptista and Emerson with a two-run double. J.T. Ulyatt followed with a double, scoring Nelson, and setting Emerson for his heroics.

The Frogs' win, coupled with Linden's upset loss at Amador, leaves Bret Harte one-half game behind the Lions (4-1) in the MLL race.

Bret Harte visits Amador in Sutter Creek tomorrow before hosting Calaveras on Friday.
