Sierra thumps soccer Cats

The Sonora High School girls' soccer team was ambushed by the Sierra High Timberwolves 9-0 last night at Dunlavy Field.

"I have probably never seen a group of girls have so much fun losing a game," Mogg stated, referring to his team's upbeat attitude despite the big loss.

The Wildcats began the game on a positive note with a cheer of, "pounce when the deer is sleeping." However, it was all downhill from there as the T-Wolves jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first five minutes. They pressured early and often while doing all the pouncing in the first half, quickly getting a comfortable lead of 6-0.

"Sierra, of course, is king of the hill when it comes to high-quality soccer play, and they did not disappoint in this game," Mogg said, noting that the T-Wolves have lost only one VOL games since joining the league in 1995-96.

The quick scoring and the physical abuse that freshman goalie Julie Ross (six saves) was taking prompted Mogg to make a substitution. Star forward Haley Hohengarten was moved back to goalie while Ross was forced out with a sore left knee. Hohengarten prowled the net, only allowing three meaningless goals to slip by while making four saves.

"Coming into the second half," Mogg said after the game, "we refined our defense to set up a well-executed offside trap, catching the Sierra offense numerous times."
