COLD WEATHER WILL PUT DAMPER ON FISHING

AS A NEW cold front moves through, it will put the usual damper on fishing at area lakes.

Last week, during the warm weather, things were really picking up although on Thursday and Friday strong winds kept smaller boats off the lakes.

Thursday, Danny Layne of Fish'n' Dan's Guide Service fished with Paul Rodriguez and they fought the wind and waves for a few hours, catching four nice rainbows.

About mid-morning, they pulled into the area of the dam to get a little break from the wind. It was there that Rodriguez hooked what he was really hoping for, a nice German brown trout.

After a "comedy of errors," which saw the fish caught under the motor and a downrigger cable, and Rodriguez getting himself hooked in the back with other rods in the boat, Layne was finally able to get the fish in the net. It weighed 5.1 pounds.

On Friday, Layne tried Lake Don Pedro with Bart Bloom and sons Matt and Josh. They played hook-and-release with a mix of king salmon, kokanee and rainbow trout up to 13 inches, keeping a few for dinner.

Also at Don Pedro that day was the "Twain Harte Connection" of Cas Munoz, John Minor and John Baldwin, and they caught limits of the smaller king salmon up to 12 inches. Most hit frozen shad or a silver Needlefish lure.

Also on Friday, Bob Post and his brother, Fred, who was visiting from Utah, battled the elements at Melones to come up with five nice rainbows up to 14 inches.

On Monday, with springlike weather (80 degrees), I joined Layne on a scouting and lure-testing run at Melones. Running frozen shad, Mepps Syclops lures and Uncle Larry's Power Spinners, we found a pocket of trout at the south end of the lake where we had a double hookup. While were were working on those two, a third rod went down (a triple hookup with two anglers is like a rookie fire drill).

We managed to net two out of the three, and by 11:30 a.m. we had our limits of rainbows up to 14 inches. Most of the fish were within the top 20 feet of water.
