Sonora High School broke through with a 4-1 Valley Oak League softball victory over Manteca yesterday at Vikki Wagoner Field.

"We needed a win badly," Sonora coach Nick Parry said.

The Wildcats (3-8, 1-1 VOL) got it with a four-run fifth inning that built on four walks, both of Manteca's errors, and singles by Katie Begier and Nicole Wong. Jenna Diede, Natalie Baldrige, Kari Martinez and Rachel Wolfe drew the walks, and Begier's hit drove in a run.

Margaret Hemphill, who reached on an error, scored along with Wong, Diede and Baldrige.

Martinez went the distance in the pitching circle, scattering six hits while striking out four and walking four.

"She had pretty good control," Parry said. "She's getting better at hitting her spots, and she kept them off-balance."

Jenny Hummel and Ashley Albert both went 2-for-3 for Manteca (0-3, 9-10) which scored its run in the top of the sixth.

Sonora plays Sierra (6-2-1, 2-1) tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. in Manteca.
