MANTECA Sonora High School's two-match winning streak came to an end on Friday with a 10-5 tennis loss to Sierra.

Sonora's No. 1 singles player Phil Emery finished 2-1 on the day by posting victories over Sierra's No. 2 singles player, Todd Schneberle (6-0), and No. 3 Allen Mackey (6-3).

The Cats' No. 2 singles player, Jason Diestel, also finished 2-1 with victories over Schneberle (6-4) and Mackey (6-1).

Brian Phommachit, Sierra's No. 1 player, posted 6-0 victories over Emery, Diestel and Sonora's No. 3 singles player, Tom McDonnell.

"(Phommachit) is undefeated," Sonora coach Carey Marmesh said. "He hits huge groundstrokes and is very experienced."

Sonora's No. 1 doubles team of Jared Orrock and Cory Siebert and its No. 2 doubles team of Pat Leahy and Garrett Diestel finished a combined 0-4 against Sierra.

"Our doubles teams were outplayed," Marmesh said. "We made too many unforced errors."

Sonora (4-5, 4-2 VOL) visits Valley Oak League-leading East Union on Wednesday in Manteca and calls Buhach Colony of Atwater on Friday.
