Bears rally to tie Calaveras

A tie may be like kissing your sister, but it's still better than getting your teeth bashed in.

That's the way the Summerville High School baseball team (1-5-1, 0-1 Mother Lode League) has to feel after wiping out a 5-0 deficit and forcing a darkness-induced 6-6 tie against Calaveras at the Summerville diamond in Tuolumne yesterday.

The game, which will be concluded either at Calaveras on April 9 or in Tuolumne on April 30, postpones the Bears' five-game losing streak, the last two of which have been by a combined score of 22-2.

The Bears launched their comeback in the bottom of the third inning following a four-run Calaveras outburst in the top half of the frame.

After Summerville starting pitcher Bubba Fristad doubled to open the inning, and Dillon Ray drew a one-out walk, Wyatt Ray loaded the bases by advancing to first when Calaveras catcher Mark Joyner couldn't hold onto a swinging strike three.

With the sacks packed, Quint Gerber put the Bears on the board with a long double off the base of the left field wall, driving in Fristad and Dillon Ray.

Then, with the infield drawn in, Travis Ford sent a soft line drive single back up the middle, scoring both Wyatt Ray and Gerber, cutting the Redskins' lead to 5-4.

Ryan Drewery relieved Fristad in the top of the fourth and escaped a self-made jam with some nifty glovework. Drewery did give up an unearned run with a bases-loaded walk, upping Calaveras' lead to 6-4, but gobbled up a sharply-hit grounder and threw out Jake Coggin with the bases still loaded to end the threat.

Summerville completed its comeback in the bottom of the fourth when Adam Artzer led off with a double to deep center field, knocking Calaveras starter Brett Dickinson out of the game in the process.

Redskin reliever Dan Sweet entered the game and promptly tied the score by walking Fristad and Drewer to loaded the bases, hitting Dillon Ray to drive in Artzer, and then balking home Fristad with the tying run.
