Five section teams play for state basketball titles

Half the games in the CIF State Basketball Championships at Arco Arena in Sacramento will include teams from the Sac-Joaquin Section.

They qualified by winning Northern California titles during the weekend, and will play Friday and Saturday against Southern California at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

? Vacaville (32-2) takes on Troy of Fullerton (30-2) for the Division II girls' title at 6 p.m. Friday.

? St. Mary's of Stockton (31-3) meets La Jolla Country Day (27-3) in the Division IV girls' final at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

St. Mary's is going for its third state title in four years.

? First-time section and NorCal champion Woodcreek of Roseville (27-5) goes for the Division III boys' crown at 2:45 p.m. Saturday against perennial power Mater Dei of Santa Ana (34-2).

? Foothill of Sacramento (32-2) plays Harvard-Westlake of Studio City (29-6) in the Division III boys' final at 8 p.m. Friday.

Foothill, a state titlist in 1994, beat Sonora High in the first round of the section playoffs.

? Modesto Christian (25-8) faces Price of Los Angeles (32-2) for the Division V boys' championship Friday afternoon at 4.

Two Sac-Joaquin teams lost in the NorCal finals, Laguna Creek of Elk Grove to Archbishop Mitty of San Jose in Division I girls, and Valley of Sacramento to Oakland Tech in Division I boys.

Another, Mother Lode League champion Amador, was knocked out in the NorCal semifinals by eventual runner-up Monte Vista Christian of Watsonville, 50-38. Amador beat Marin Catholic of Kentfield 49-47 in the first round.

Marysville, which finished second to Amador in the section after beating Summerville 70-67 in overtime in the semis, lost 62-56 in the first round of NorCals to eventual champion Hercules.
