Baseball Frogs whip rival in MLL opener

SAN ANDREAS Bret Harte High School swung some hot bats in the early innings and opened the Mother Lode League baseball race with an 8-5 victory over archrival Calaveras on Friday.

The Bullfrogs blistered Calaveras starter Andrew DeLappe for three runs in the top of the first inning and four more in the third. It wasn't a case of DeLappe being bad, but of Bret Harte being good.

"He pitched great ... he threw hard with great location," Bret Harte coach Heath Lane said. "But we were on fire ... we hit everything."

Ken Baptista led off the game with a double and scored on a double by Anthony Bennett to get the Bullfrogs (5-3) rolling. Travis Emerson added a run-scoring single.

Baptista was at it again in the third, doubling after a pair of singles and a Calaveras error. Emerson singled in the seventh and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Scott McNurlin.

Sean Nelson pitched the distance for Bret Harte, striking out 11 and walking three while allowing seven hits.

"He pitched great, but he threw 125 pitches," Lane said. "I hope he can come back strong Wednesday."

That's when the Bullfrogs play a big early league game against defending champion and perennial diamond power Amador, which won its MLL opener 6-1 over its own archrival, Argonaut. The first pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Bret Harte diamond.

Bennett will be on the mound two days later when the Bullfrogs visit Linden.
