Soccer Bears 9-0 going into MLL season

A big second half carried the undefeated Summerville High School girls' soccer team to a 7-0 victory over Ripon on Friday in the Bears' long-awaited home opener at Thorsted Field in Tuolumne.

The Vermillion sisters accounted for three goals and two assists for the Bears (9-0), who added to the best start in the program history in advance of tomorrow's Mother Lode League opener against Argonaut. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Jackson.

A goal by Megan Reynolds in the 10th minute, assisted by Kadi Davies, stood for a 1-0 halftime lead against Ripon. Then Summerville went to work.

Nichole Caldera attacked from her sweeper position and scored off a pass from Lindsay Vermillion in the 47th minute, Lindsay scored unassisted in the 55th, and Lindsay assisted her sister in the 57th to make it 4-0.

The Lindsay Vermillion goal came off the rebound of a header her sister zinged off the crossbar after a corner kick by Reynolds.

The onslaught continued as Kelly Marquardt scored on a penalty kick in the 65th minute, Jordan tallied from Reynolds in the 70th, and Lauren Gianelli scored on another penalty kick in the 78th.

"A depleted Ripon squad had a difficult game," Summerville coach Jim Frazier said. "The absence of several of their seniors forced younger, less-experience players into the game. They defended fairly well in the first half, but couldn't hold up the remainder of the game."

That spells trouble against a team that has won the last two MLL and Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championships. Now, the Bears go for three-peats.

"It's been quite an accomplishment for the team to have gone undefeated in preseason for the first time," Frazier said. "League will present a new challenge as the MLL has decided to play three rounds this year (rather than two).

"To be successful with the longer league season, we'll have to remain well-focused and avoid the injury potential that the extra games may present."
