Break up the Bears!

The Summerville High School boys' golf team has a three-match winning streak after yesterday's 237-243 Mother Lode League victory over Amador at Mountain Springs.

The Bears (3-1) were led by the day's medalist, junior Josh Minner, who shot a 38 on the long, hilly, par-36 layout south of Sonora. Minner edged Amador's Brian Bellotti by one stroke.

Corey Van Houten and Sy Vassallo had 46s for Summerville, while Taylor Parsons had a 44 for Amador.

Next up for the Bears is a meeting with the MLL's top team, defending champion Bret Harte, Tuesday at Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp. The Bullfrogs have shot as low as 200 this season.

"I don't know if we can shoot the same kind of scores as Bret Harte, but our guys are playing well and having a lot of fun," Summerville coach Jack Samuelian said.

The Wildcat girls' team overcame a late start and the host Oakdale Mustangs to earn its first Valley Oak League win of the season with a 3-0 shutout yesterday.

With the game delayed 30 minutes because of the referees' late arrival, Sonora (5-3-2, 1-0-1) didn't get on the board until the 26-minute mark when Nicole Hart started a break on the Cats' end of the field with a pass to Natalie Noble, who one-touched a second pass to a charging Lacey Jones. Jones then beat Oakdale keeper Allbrie Porter in a one-on-one showdown for a 1-0 Sonora lead.

"We got a pretty slow start in this match ? the blood wasn't flowing well for either team," Sonora coach Rick Mogg said. "Once we began clicking, our squad again managed superb pressure on the Oakdale defense. Notable pressure came from Heather Duerkop and Kayla Rodgers in the midfield."

Sonora maintained its 1-0 lead until the 69-minute mark, when the Cats pummeled Porter with a flurry of shots before Ciara Downey finally broke through for a 2-0 lead.
