Soccer team second in Meyer league

The 14-and-under boys' team representing Tuolumne County Youth Soccer in the Bill Meyer Winter League came up with a second-place finish, the highest in years by a team from this area.

The squad went 7-1-2 in regular-season games against competition from Calaveras, Amador, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Merced counties, outscoring the opposition 36-10 and posting five shutouts.

Tuolumne went 3-1 in the playoffs, the only defeat 3-1 to Modesto in the championship game.

On the roster were Scott Birkestrand, Kyle Schultz, Michael Tarantino, Jordan Schultz, Aaron Plowman, Estaban Mejia, Shon Walsh, Matt Wilcox, Brian Steele, Ryan McCardy, D.J. Reel, Mitchell Nihonyanagi, Chris Forster, Shane Kearney, and Bobby Hawks.

The team was coached by Mark Walsh and Dave Reel.
