Sonora edges Summerville in pitchers' duel

The calendar may say mid-March, but the Sonora and Summerville high school baseball teams played like they were in mid-season form in their annual cross-county game last night under the lights at Sonora's Bev Barron Field.

In a contest that featured outstanding pitching and tight defense, Sonora catcher Greg Pappas broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out single off Summerville's Ryan Drewery, scoring Brent Mackenzie for a 1-0 Wildcat victory.

"Of course, you like to be on the right end of a 1-0 game," Sonora coach Mike Silva said. "But both teams were right there and played really well."

Six pitchers combined to allow a mere eight hits (including just one for extra bases) while striking out 16 and walking five.

The two offenses combined to strand 15 of 16 baserunners.

"I'd like to have seen a little more hitting, but the pitchers were a little more on than the hitters tonight," Silva said. "Anytime you get good pitching like that, it keeps the hitters off balance."

Louis McColloch (2 IP, 2H, 4K) picked up the win in relief for Sonora (5-4) by pitching the final two innings. After wriggling out of a jam in the sixth, McColloch slammed the door on Summerville (1-3-1) in the seventh by throwing eight straight strikes and striking out two of the three batters he faced in the final frame.

As well as McColloch pitched, the Wildcats' best performance on the mound came from Josh Townsend (3 IP, 1 H, BB, 6K), who managed to overcome three Sonora errors with six strikeouts.

In the third inning, after a walk to Dillon Ray and an error by third baseman Travis Flosi put base runners on first and second with two outs, Townsend got out of trouble by whiffing Adam Artzer for his third strikeout of the inning.
