Swimmers fourth, sixth in SLO relay meet

SAN LUIS OBISPO Sonora High School's swim teams finished fourth and sixth in the San Luis Obispo Relays on Saturday.

The girls were fourth in the 13-school field, led by the performance of 4x100-yard relay teammates Patty Allen, Katie Baier, Brittney Martino, and Melisa Hough. They swam a Sac-Joaquin Section varsity qualifying time (4:03.12) while finishing third.

Allen's leadoff leg (1:01.94) was a frosh-soph qualifying time, and Baier's second leg (56.54) was a varsity qualifier and the fastest of the race for the Wildcats.

Also, the girls' 200 medley team of Lisa Watts, Becky Clinite, Martino, and Kristi Calbert finished eighth (2:13.93).

The boys took sixth as a team, with their 4x100 team of Josh Land, Riley Marmesh, Curtis Rappe, and Jay Repetto taking seventh and posting a varsity qualifying time (3:49.17).

"The weather was perfect and the kids swam a bunch of super times," coach LaDeane Hansten said.

The boys' 200 medley team of James Pedro, Danny Scott, Stephen Grant, and Land came home eighth in (2:08.93). Grant, who had three personal bests, was named boys' swimmer of the meet by Hansten.

In the mixed 200 medley, Sonora took third (2:06.85) with Zach Lemas, Clinite, Corynne Guthrie, and Robert Dickerson.

Guthrie also had a five-second improvement in her leg of the girls' 200 individual medley relay (2:38.29) in helping Sonora finish sixth (7:59.35) along with Heather Fisher and Allen (2:29.87, varsity qualifying time). Guthrie, who also had personal bests in the 50 butterfly and the 50 breaststroke, was named girls' swimmer of the meet.
