The Bears (7-0) notched their fourth straight one-goal victory by squeaking past Escalon 2-1 yesterday in the valley.

Jordan Vermillion, who opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 32-minute mark, broke a 1-1 tie with eight minutes remaining in the game off a pass from Shannon Hayes.

"Escalon surprised us with their strong play the whole game," Summerville coach Jim Frazier said. "However, the positive we took from the game was pushing hard to get the game-winner after having been tied midway through the second half."

The Bears visit Sonora today after beating the Wildcats 2-1 on a shootout in the first game of last weekend's Bret Harte Tournament.

Frosh-Soph The short-handed Bearcubs (3-2-1) dropped a 5-1 decision to Escalon. Summerville, which had just nine players available, got a first-half goal from K.C. Benner off a pass from Amber Bartholomew.
