RIVERBANK The Sonora High School baseball team continued to wield big bats in an 18-6 victory over Riverbank yesterday.

The Wildcats (3-2) smacked 15 hits and blew the game open with a nine-run rally in the top of the second inning.

"We hit a lot of balls to the right side, which means the guys are keeping their heads down and (swings) inside," Sonora coach Mike Silva said. "And they're getting ahead in the count and not striking out."

Only one Sonora batted went down on strikes.

Karl Waite led the hit parade by going 3-for-5, and Tommy Grove went 2-for-3 with a double. Grove's two-batter was Sonora's only extra-base hit.

Josh Townsend picked up his third pitching victory of the season. He shared the mound with Brent McKenzie and Brian Sipe.

Sonora now ventures into the shark-infested waters of the Turlock Tournament. The Wildcats, who've won three in a row with an average of 15.3 runs per game, face Lincoln of Stockton at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Turlock High.
